Outdoor Living Rooms
White Residence
Scottsdale, AZ
The White residential project had three distinct goals: (1) turf-reduction, (2) introduction of functional outdoor living spaces, and (3) strategic screening with plant materials for added privacy. Though the site already boasted a gorgeous landscape, with a unique plant selection along its outer edge, a vibrantly attractive property wall, well-sited healthy trees, and a large expansive lawn, our client's existing landscape was not doing them functional justice. It was pretty, but not readily useable for an outdoor-living lifestyle.
We transformed the space through removing the lawn entirely, in effect reducing their outdoor water demands by 200%. In it's place, we creatively sited three functional outdoor living rooms: an al-fresco dining patio, an evening terrace / conversation patio, and a private "spa room." The space was "greened" back up with a lush palette of desert-adapted plants and unique succulents. This softened the introduction of more hardscape throughout, and brought back a smarter, more textural "version of green" than the lawn had provided prior.
The strongest "moment" in this stunning design, is the experience through the front door of the home. Here, guests are greeted with an awesome view along a central axis out high windows to the amazing landscape beyond. With a nearly symmetrical design, the eye is guided to the garden's primary focal point, a large stone fire pit back-dropped by a specimen Palo Brea. From this central social space, our clients and their guests can dine open-air beneath an attractive vine covered pergola to the west, or relax in a secluded outdoor spa room, flanked by tall hedges to the east.
Note: This project just left the drawing board and is being bid upon for construction. When the project is complete, we will upload photos of the finished landscape.
