Family- Friendly Design Concepts
Kyler Residence
San Tan Valley, AZ
The Kyler residential project was aimed at exploring concepts with our client and then capturing a final design that contractor(s) can bid on. Because the Kylers have young children, one of the most important elements to them was a central play-space and a path that the kids could use to ride through the backyard to the front of the home. This set the tone for the design. Since we knew the children would be riding their bikes and scooters around a path, a constraint of working only in curves was applied because right-angles aren't conducive to smooth riding.
For the Kyler's, we originally created three schematic designs. There were elements in each design that the client liked, so we developed a fourth schematic that tied them all together. This became the final layout for moving into a more developed design.
Below is how Sonoran Shadows engages with our clients that are not sure of a single direction for their landscape and give us creative license to develop multiple options.
SCHEMATIC DESIGN
Depending upon the services our clients need, we typically work through a schematic design phase first. In this phase, we take the client's "wish list" (all of the elements, amenities, and functional needs for that space) and begin to map-out a couple alternatives for how the space could best be used. In looking at the attached schematic design series below, you'll notice the same elements being incorporated into each of the designs. The shape and overall layout varies, giving each schematic its own unique feel. Before working through these concepts, we define the style that our client is looking for (i.e. transitional, modern, classical, rustic, etc). This informs the layout greatly, but so do the functions needed.
DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
In the design development phase, we take the schematic and begin to outline exactly where all elements are going to go, their exact dimensions, as well as recommended construction and finish materials. We also develop a specific plant palette based upon the desired maintenance level and aesthetic that the client is looking for. Finally, we consider architectural structures, lighting, irrigation, hardscape, and softscape. If there are items needing more detail, we'll work up elevations and construction details.
Note: This project just left the drawing board and is moving into construction now. When the project is complete, we will upload photos of the finished landscape.
